Introduction
There
is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease and no treatment
that will stop its progression. However, several medications
are available that can help with some symptoms. These
medications can slow down the decline of memory, language
and thinking abilities.
Mild
to moderate Alzheimer's disease
Three drugs are available
in Canada to treat symptoms in people with mild to
moderate Alzheimer's disease -- Aricept,
Exelon and
Reminyl.
All are cholinesterase inhibitors.
Moderate
to advanced Alzheimer's disease
Ebixa® (memantine
hydrochloride) has been conditionally approved to
treat symptoms in people with moderate to advanced Alzheimer's disease. Aricept has been approved to treat symptoms in
people with mild to moderate and advanced Alzheimer's disease. See
the Drug Approval Process page
for information on
conditional approvals.
