Focus
Group Summary
In
the summer of 2001, the Alzheimer Society of Canada co-ordinated
focus groups across the country of people in the early
stages of Alzheimer's disease (or a related dementia).
The objective was to identify issues from these individuals
that would assist the Society in creating pertinent educational
and other resources. The information-gathering was also
conducted on the Society's Web site section, I
Have Alzheimer's Disease.
Ten
early-stage support groups participated in the survey,
representing seven provinces. Fifty-four men and women
responded, ranging in age from 52 to 83 years. All participants
had been, or were in the process of being, diagnosed
with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.
Questions
posed to the groups were:
- What
information do you need at this time?
- How
would you like to receive this information?
- What
are your feelings about having Alzheimer's disease?
- What
concerns do you have?
- What
would you say to another person with the disease?
- What
would you say to your doctor?
- What
is important to you?
- What
is your hope for the future?
