Supporting your local Alzheimer Society is as easy as having a cup of coffee! -- Coffee Break and World Alzheimer's Day focus is "No time to lose"

TORONTO -- On Sept. 21, 2004, Canadians can help their local Alzheimer Society provide essential programs and services simply by having a cup of coffee at one of the over 10,000 Coffee Break™ locations across the country. The Alzheimer Society of Canada, a founding member of Alzheimer's Disease International, has chosen World Alzheimer's Day as the official start date of their 2004 Coffee Break fundraiser to reinforce the message that there is "No time to lose."

"No time to lose" is an urgent reminder to everyone that the number of people with Alzheimer's disease around the world is set to double over the next 25 years. "Currently Alzheimer's disease and related dementias affect 364,000 Canadians over the age of 65 and these numbers are projected to increase to over ¾ million by 2031 if a cure is not found," says Steve Rudin, Executive Director, Alzheimer Society of Canada. "Coffee Break is a simple way to support the people in your community diagnosed with the disease, their family members and caregivers."

Coffee Break is an annual nationwide event organized to raise funds in support of the work of local Alzheimer Societies across Canada. Donations are collected for every cup of coffee poured. In the past nine years, Coffee Break has raised over $6 million across Canada.

Coffee Break locations can be found everywhere: from coffee shops and retail stores to community centres. To find a location nearest you, contact your local Alzheimer Society, visit our Web site at www.alzheimer.ca (News and Events section) or call the Coffee Break hotline at 1-888-815-6829.

The Alzheimer Society of Canada is grateful to Pfizer Canada Inc., National Patron of Coffee Break since 1997, for their ongoing support and sponsorship. Appreciation is also extended to Sara Lee and National Car Rental for their participation as in-kind sponsors.
