House of Commons Passes Motion on Alzheimer Strategy
OTTAWA,
April 22, 2005 -- Today, Mrs. Susan Kadis, MP Thornhill
had
her
Private Members Motion (M-170) passed in the House of Commons.
The
Motion which calls on the government, in consultation with
the
provinces
and territories, to include Alzheimer's disease and related
dementias as
a
significant and integral component of the Chronic Disease
Strategy
received support from all opposition parties with the exception
of the
Bloc.
"Certainly,
as Canada's 10 million baby boomers turn 65 and head
straight into the age of the highest risk for Alzheimer's disease, we
need
to take action now to prevent the worst impact of this
disease on all
aspects of our health care system, our communities and
our society," said Mrs. Kadis.
Over the next 25 years, it has been predicted that
Alzheime's disease will prove to have the highest economic,
social and
health cost burden of all diseases in Canada.
"I
am very heartened to have this opportunity to put Alzheimer's disease
in the spotlight," stated Mrs. Kadis upon emerging
from the House."This is a major step forward and I
will continue to fight for the
successful implementation on behalf of all our courageous
loved ones
who
have been taken from us and so that the next generation
will never
ever
have to endure this devastating disease," stated Mrs.
Kadis.
The
central purpose to this initiative is to put in place
an
all-inclusive approach to this disease by providing an
opportunity for
shared learning, the development of best practice models
of care
across
jurisdictional boundaries and the adoption of a strategic
and
cost-effective response to Alzheimer's disease in conjunction
with the
provinces and non-governmental organizations.
