WELCOME
TO OUR WORLD
By
Lois Daley Laycock
I
wrote this poem when my sister-in-law was diagnosed with
the disease. Since then two of my friends have also been
diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
I
am known primarily for my work as a war poet. I have
published four books of poetry and am working on a fifth.
I am the author of The unknown soldier has come home,
the official poem sanctioned by the Royal Canadian Legion
for a millennium project. All proceeds from my books
have been donated to the Legion. A highlight for me was
to be honoured with the Caring Canadian Medal in
April 2001 by Her Excellency Governor General of Canada.

Lois' other piece, TO
MY DEAR WIFE.)

WELCOME
TO OUR WORLD
Welcome
to our world
Where something has gone wrong
Brightness has faded away
The road ahead is long
In
our world
There are many fears
It is a lonely place
There are many tears
We
are often misunderstood
And strike back with rage
Sometimes we feel, as if
We are in a prison cage
We
no longer have freedom
To just come and go
We depend on family and friends
Which takes a heavy toll
Our
memory cannot be restored
We cannot remember names
We have loving hearts
In spite of trouble and pain
Our
minds are like a puzzle
With pieces torn away
Will they ever find the pieces?
So we may return to our
cherished
days
