An Ode to a Grandmother

By Nicky Marquette

I hear the doorbell
Forever, I've been waiting
For it's welcoming chime

I run to the door
Popping down the stairs,
Racing and slipping
Down the hallway
I try and control myself,
Dodging every obstacle
But I can't,
I fall.

I don't give up,
I keep running,
And finally, I get there

SHE'S HERE!!!

I jump for joy
And hug her

She wraps her arms
Around me
And squeezes me
With the strength
Of a bear

A smile
Lift's across her face
She has come to live
And hug me
Every day

Alzheimer's
Can take over
Your life
I know now
That she is safe,
Here with us

"She used to be
The life of the party"
People would say
But now
She listens
To the conversations
Of others

Smiles,
Sings,
And laughs on cue

This disease
Can take away
Your memory
And strip you
Of your pride
And dignity

I know that inside
My grandma is there
And she is always
Protecting me

And though
She cannot remember
What she did
Moments ago
I know that
She will
Always remember
Her family
