Consumption

By Laura LeHew

At 44 my little sister was diagnosed with dementia; the same year our father opted out of the Alzheimer’s study because people might think he had Alzheimer’s. He did. Last year I moved my sister across the country and became her custodian. Her thoughts now are only of eating and ice.

I am currently working on a collection of poems entitled "Thirst" which explores the dementia of my little sister.

Blue line

8:00 AM

(you confess when I pick you up
from your new home—an 80's plaid assisted living space)
prepackaged pills in paper packets
biscuits 'n butter
runny eggs w/hair (but, you say this about all breakfasts
at all the homes)
Lipton tea with cream and sugar

10:00 AM

(after dropping off a box @ Fedex)
how about some of that yummy "chocolate coffee" a grande
chocolate croissant

11:00 AM

(after you take a shower)
Twinkie
chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream frosting;
left over from a birthday party (you weren't invited to)

11:15 AM

(while you start your laundry)
pomegranate green "Republican" tea
with creamer and sugar

Noon

(because you said—hey it's time for lunch!)
strawberry white tea with honey and cream,
the real deal and that's
all you'd eat

3:15 PM

(while attempting to beat me at Scrabble)
chips with sour cream and
chives and another
strawberry white tea with cream and honey

5:30 PM

(dinner with Dad at Friday's—remember he's the one with Alzheimer's)
cheese with chicken, hold the leafy vegetables,
mashed potatoes, strawberry lemonade slushie—make that two
oreo ice-cream sundae

6:30 PM

(from Friday's 2 my hotel 2 the house)
2 oatmeal cranberry dunkers
a handful of dried apple slices

8:30 PM

(while trying to beat me at Shanghai)
rose ice tea with honey

10:00 PM

(while trying to beat me at dice—and nearly winning)
left over DQ ice cream cake

11:15 PM

(while we all lost to our Down's nephew at Pokemon Sorry)
Twinkie
organic banana chips—to which you muttered "yuck, if only

there were some peanut butter cups"

Midnight

(back to dice)
and banana chips

12:15 PM

(a brief bed-time snack, please)
pretzels dipped in Skippy, creamy not crunchy and
you wonder "what's for breakfast tomorrow and when could
we eat; could we have waffles and bacon; eggs (no hair)
with biscuits and gravy—and maybe just maybe
some of that yummy chocolate coffee?"
